Credit-Building Tools & Resources

Compare options that can help you build positive credit history. A useful tool meets a clear need, explains its cost, and gives you time to review its terms.

From Aleylin

Butterfly Credit Tool™ · Private beta

Our bilingual, self-guided credit education platform, for people with an SSN and with an ITIN. You review your information, you decide, and you file your own disputes.

It is currently available only to a limited private group, while legal documentation and launch materials are finalized. There is no open public enrollment.

When it opens, participation will require the designated MyFreeScoreNow monitoring plan ($65.99/month, no free trial), paid directly to MFSN.

Joining the waitlist is not a purchase, an enrollment, or a contract, and it does not reserve a place. Aleylin may earn an affiliate commission on MFSN enrollment, at no additional cost to you.

Four common functions

View and understand reports

Check which bureaus are included, how often information updates, and how you can correct your account details.

Build positive history

Confirm which bureaus the provider reports to, every fee, and what happens if you pay late or close the account.

Organize payments and utilization

Alerts and budgets can support habits, but they do not replace reviewing statements or having funds available to pay.

Watch for changes and protect yourself

Compare coverage, alerts, and the assistance process. No service can detect or prevent every instance of fraud.

Seeing your reports

Three-bureau monitoring

Free one-bureau view

MyFreeScoreNow offers a free view based on information from one bureau, and they choose which bureau is shown. It is not a complete three-bureau report.

Three credit-builder accounts we disclose openly

If you enroll through the links below, Aleylin may earn a commission at no additional cost to you. That is why each card states what identification the product requires and what it costs. None of them is required for anything Aleylin does, and you can build history without buying any of them.

Other ways to build history

Aleylin earns nothing from anything in this section. It is here because these are sometimes the better option, and because several of them cost nothing.

Secured card

Review the deposit, fees, interest, which bureaus it reports to, and how the deposit is returned. Some issuers accept an ITIN and others do not — ask before applying.

Credit unions

Many local credit unions offer builder loans and secured cards with lower fees, and several work with an ITIN. Ask about their membership requirements.

Authorized user

A family member can add you to an existing account, sometimes at no cost. Confirm the issuer reports authorized users — if it does not, it will not appear in your file.

Rent or utility reporting

Ask which payments are reported, to which bureaus, for how long, and whether late payments may also be reported. Not every score model uses this data.

Decision checklist

Questions to ask before accepting

  • What is the total cost, when does it renew, and how is it canceled?
  • Which bureaus receive or display the information?
  • Which score model does it show, and is the score educational only?
  • Does it require a hard credit inquiry?
  • How does it use, retain, or share your data?
  • What happens if the provider reports incorrect information?
  • Is it available in your state and does it accept your type of identification?
