Credit scores

Your score is a signal, not a sentence.

A score summarizes part of the information in your credit report at a particular moment. It does not tell your whole story and does not guarantee that a lender will approve or deny an application.

A guide, not a promise

General ranges from 300 to 850.

These ranges are commonly used to explain scores, but they are not approval rules. A lender may use a different model, version, or additional criteria.

300–579 · Low

Options may be limited and costs may be higher. Begin by reviewing your reports and building stable habits.

580–669 · Fair

Some options may be available, but terms vary widely by provider and product.

670–739 · Good

Many models view this range favorably, although each decision includes more than the score.

740–799 · Very good

This may help with access to better terms, but it does not guarantee approval or a particular rate.

800–850 · Excellent

This reflects a strong history in many models. Income, debts, and lender rules still matter.

Your score may differ among Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion because the same accounts may not appear identically at all three bureaus. It may also change based on the scoring model and calculation date. Educational scores from a monitoring service may differ from the FICO® scores a lender uses.

What commonly matters

Five areas worth understanding.

Payment history

Late payments may affect scores. Pay at least the minimum on time and use reminders when helpful.

Balances and utilization

Using a large share of available limits may matter. Work on reducing balances without neglecting other obligations.

Age of history

Older accounts may add context. Do not close an account solely to change a score; review its costs and risks first.

New accounts and applications

Many applications within a short period may add inquiries and new accounts. Apply intentionally.

Types of accounts

Some models consider experience with different credit types. Do not open an account you do not need simply to create a mix.

Understand Monitoring

Keep perspective

Work on the information and habits, not on chasing a number.

Review your reports, correct inaccurate information, pay on time when possible, and create a sustainable balance plan. No action guarantees a particular increase or approval.
